An Associate since 2006 and with more than 10 years’ experience in the patents field, Nick holds an MA and MEng from Trinity College, Cambridge. He became a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2001.

Nick joined A.A.Thornton & Co. in 1997. This followed completion of an advanced course in Design, Manufacture and Management, which involved exposure to a wide range of industries through factory visits and in-company projects. He gained the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, in 1998.

Nick deals with patent issues across a wide range of areas, including plasma displays, interactive television, overhead power cables and medical instruments. He also handles British and European Community Design applications.

His workload involves a significant amount of European prosecution for large clients. This includes opposition work and attending oral proceedings at the EPO, where his working knowledge of German is a valuable asset. He is also active looking after the interests of small companies and individual inventors, both drafting and filing new applications.

Nick gives regular tutorials to candidates preparing for the UK and European patent examinations. He has also lectured for the CIPA patent administrators’ course and has taken part in the CIPA’s programme of patent clinics. Previous >
