A Partner since 1997 and with over 17 years’ experience in the trade marks field, Vanessa specialises in UK and European trade mark prosecution. She holds a BSc (Hons) Science from Nottingham University, an MSc Intellectual Property - Law and Science from London University and is a Registered Trade Mark Attorney.

Vanessa joined A.A.Thornton & Co. in 1994. Prior to this she spent two years as a Trade Mark Attorney with Venner Shipley & Co and three years as a Technical Assistant with Carpmaels & Ransford. She started her career as a Regulatory Affairs Officer with the Agricultural Division of Allied Colloids.

Vanessa handles a wide range of UK and international trade mark cases and works across various commercial sectors. Her clients include fashion retailers, breweries, food manufacturers, banks, travel operators and internet companies.

  • Conducting and fighting off oppositions to UK and European trade marks
  • Providing opinions on infringement and validity
  • Infringement searches, including advice on search strategy and analysis of results
  • Appointing and instructing Counsel to obtain opinions on particular aspects of law
  • Member of ITMA, INTA, PTMG and ECTA
